In 1977, Antwerp-based BMW racing specialist JUMA entered a BMW 530i for the Spa 24H. Top driver Eddy JOOSEN and Jean-Claude ANDRUET took victory in the JUMA built and run BMW that year.New attempts to win the Belgian classic were made in 78-79 and 1980 with new car built for each season. For 1981 the final year before FIA would change the racing regulation to Groupe A.

JUMA once again built a new 530i. With BASTOS backing and star driver JOOSEN, ANDRUET and VERMEERSCH, JUMA technology and experience with the 530i and its handling and braking superiority over the competition, this team was the n°1 favorite for the overall win of the 1981 Spa 24Hours.

The car took the lead of the race during at night, but the team suffered a setback earlier in the morning when Dirk WERMEERSH missed the Bus Stop Chicane and violated marshal’s order while proceeding through the escape road. The penalty was exclusion, leaving JOOSEN and ANDRUET to go the rest of the way but the car did continue to lead early until the afternoon when Andruet took the wheel for the last stint. A roker arm broke with only one hour to go and the car had to stop in the pits. Andruet was determined to finish strongly taking the 2nd place overall and a win in +2500 Class.
This BASTOS sponsored car represent the start of 17 years of BASTOS-BMW partnership and was the first association of the Munich based manufacturer with the belgian cigaret brand. A true collector for every touring car fan. The great thing is that it’s for sale but unfortunately, we couldn’t convince our bank for that..!
