For every Touring Car fan, like me, the big news of the week is the fact that Volvo will be joining the World Touring Car Championship – WTCC – for 2016 through its competition department known as Polestar Cyan Racing, full press release here. Funny is that it comes 30 years after Volvo stormed to the European Touring Car Championship – ETCC – title with what was known as the “Flyin’ Brick” or the Volvo 240T Group A, driven in period by Thomas Lindström and prepared by the Swiss team of Rudi Eggenberger aka “Volvo Dealer Team” at the time, the full story of the campaign is available here.
But anyway, let’s talk about history and historic racing, this year, a gentleman campaigned, thanks to Moto Historics, the original 1984 Luna Sportpromotion Volvo 240T Group A car in the FIA Historic International Series named Heritage Touring Cup around Europe and somehow nearly repeated history 30 years after but only to miss out on the title due to a transmission failure during the last round at Paul Ricard. Unfortunate but congratulations to Andrew and all the team for hustlin’ the “Flyin’ Brick” around ! It made our year.
